Description
Cape May is a city at the southern tip of Cape May Peninsula in Cape May County, New Jersey, where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the country's oldest vacation resort destinations. In the summer, Cape May's population is expanded by as many as 40,000 to 50,000 visitors.
With a rich history, award-winning beaches, designation as a top bird watching location, and many examples of Victorian architecture, Cape May is a seaside resort drawing visitors from around the world. Cape May was recognized as one of America's top 10 beaches by the Travel Channel and its beach was ranked fifth in New Jersey in the 2008 Top 10 Beaches Contest sponsored by the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium.
It is my favorite place and I like to visit it as often as I can.
Cape May Lighthouse built in 1859 is located at the tip of Cape May peninsula. The 157-foot-high lighthouse is still an aid to navigation. Visitors who climb the 199 steps to the top of the lighthouse are rewarded with a spectacular panoramic view of the scenic Cape May peninsula. The first known lighthouse at Cape May was built in 1823. By 1847 a new lighthouse was erected on a high bluff, however, due to the encroaching sea and poor building design it was eventually dismantled. The current lighthouse used the original bricks of the 1847 lighthouse. The sunset over the lighthouse and Cape May attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world.
