Description
Seven-forty (7:40) is a Jewish melody and song of unknown origin. One common story claims that the song originated in the late 19th Century and refers to the train that brought shtetl-dwelling Jewish merchants to and from Odessa every day, arriving at 7:40 a.m. and leaving at 7:40 p.m.
The song has the following words: a train will come, it will definitely come, and it will come exactly at seven-forty. Then, it continues, that it may be late or it may even never come, but we are still going to wait for that train.
In this painting, I decided to dig deeper into the song by portraying that if one train does not show up, another one will always be there at a different time; if no trains are ever available, then we still need to find a way to move forward in life and keep living.
The train is supposed to be a symbol for the progression of life. It is never okay to stop living one’s life to the fullest. One must always move forward despite the challenges and hardships they face. Everyday new adventures wait to fill our lives with amazement. To Life! To Life! L’Chaim!

This artwork, as all my other paintings, is oil on canvas. My technique is to create many layers with plenty of texture. It usually takes a long time before the painting is finalized.
