Description
THE PRISONER by Alexander Pushkin (1822)
I sit in a dungeon and gaze through its grate.
My mirthless companion in merciless fate
Young eagle, despondently sits at my feet;
He flutters his wings, and he pecks at his meat.
He pecks, and he drops it, and muses and dreams;
He nurses the dream of my own, so it seems;
He calls me with eloquent glances and cry;
He's eager to tell me: "My friend, let us fly!
We're born to be free; 'tis time, brother, 'tis time
To fly where white mountains keep still and sublime,
To fly where wide waters reflect azure sky,
To fly where wild winds only wander… and I!.."
